I hooked up with Ben and his buddy Chase yesterday and we drove up Rock Creek Canyon looking for ski lines. A small storm was clearing with gusty winds and a few snow flakes in the air.
We spied a nice protected cirque where we hope to find good snow above the Big Meadow Campground. Ben skins up an avalanche path about half way up.
Chase at about the same point.
We were able to attain the Southeast ridge of Red Mountain. A bit windy!
But sunny and pleasant enough.
With fine views of Mt Morgan South and the wind transporting snow.
Although the cirque seemed protected, strong winds and recent sunny days had wreaked havoc on the powder with a variety of crusts and snow types. Skiing was fair for the most part though.
Chase noticed a big open slope with potential for better skiing on the other (east) side of the canyon, so we headed over to check it out.
It proved to be a good move as we had nice skiing in there.
Both spots were new zones for me, which I enjoy, and although the skiing wasn't quite as good as we've had recently there were still plenty of great turns.
