More Riding in the Bodie Hills

Last weekend we celebrated a friends birthday up in Lundy Canyon, so I took the opportunity to explore a bit in the southern Bodie Hills.

First I took the gravel bike out and rolled down Highway 157.

A little dull but a good way to warm up and enjoy views of Mono Lake.

I then headed up Bridgeport Canyon where I was pleased to find great riding, fine scenery, and total solitude.

I stopped to admire this nice spring.

The road was ideal for the gravel bike.

These hills were even brighter red in person and were pockmarked with mines.

I then arrived at Highway 270 (Bodie Road) and the serene Mormon Meadow.

After a short stint west on 270 I headed up Cinnabar Canyon.

The two track there was occasionally rocky but mostly pleasant.

I did this ride as an out & back except I took the "Goat Ranch Cutoff" on the return trip instead of Highway 157. The Cutoff was quite soft in spots but was a generally pleasant alternative to the highway. A shin deep creek crossing near the end was "fun."

Beautiful day in places I had never been before.

The next day dawned a bit cloudy and a bit cooler.

I took the mountain bike up north off the Bodie Road to explore some tracks I noticed on previous rides.

Big views back to the Sierra.

The riding was mostly like this with a few rock gardens here and there.

I ended up at the shallow saddle left of center.

Cool area. Pretty beat up by a lot of cattle traffic but next to zero vehicle traffic. Fun little ride.
