After leaving El Malpais we traveled to Albuquerque for a friends wedding reception. While there we took a trip up to Tent Rocks National Monument for a short hike.
Although the rocks have the look of sandstone they are in fact formed of layers of pyroclastic flow from nearby volcanic fields. The "tents" are formed when softer pumice and tuff are eroded beneath harder caprocks.
The trail initially heads up a canyon with a nice narrow section.
As the trail emerges from the narrows the canyon opens and the formations become more dramatic.
Whimsical!
The trail climbs steeply out of the canyon allowing great views of the rocks.
Fascinating locale!
