Corniglia to Manarola

The next day Mary and I elected to hike from our "hometown" of Corniglia up to the village of Volastra and then down to either Manarola or Riomagiorre.

The trail above Corniglia is quite steep for a half mile or so, but also quite beautiful and relatively quiet.

At this junction we headed to Volastra on the 586 trail which traverses pleasantly in and out of small drainages.

Looking back to Corniglia.

 Pretty woodland along the way.

As we neared Volastra the trail is routed through someone's backyard!

The view ahead to Manarola

and behind to Corniglia

Well tended vineyards were a common sight around Volastra and Groppo.

The pleasant plaza upon entering Volastra.

We headed up above Volastra on the road route 530. Looking back to town.

We didn't realize that 530 was a dirt road rather than a trail. It afforded pleasant hiking with fine views but lacked the charm of the trails.

Another view of Volastra

The route to Riomaggiore involved more hiking on a dirt road so we elected to take a steep trail down to Groppo and then Manarola instead. This is the view of Groppo.

Groppo with Volastra behind and left.

Shortly we found ourselves in Manarola.

Like all of the Cinque Terre villages, Manarola is simply stunning!

After a fine meal and good wine we boarded the ferry back to Monterossa where we caught the train to Corniglia. Mary heads out to the dock to board the ferry.

The views form the ferry were grand. This pic doesn't do it justice but gives and idea.

Another wonderful day hiking the Cinque Terre!
