Porto Venere

After two solid days of hiking we were ready for an easier day, so we took the ferry down to Porto Venere, south of Cinque Terre. Other than a few pictures in a well worn guidebook we had no real inkling of what to expect.

The ferry ride alone was incredible. The coastline becomes more dramatic as we headed south with grand limestone precipices. Then, as we approached Porto Venere a huge fort and a stately church crested the bluffs. Amazing

This is the church San Pietro and the narrow strait leading to the port.

and the Castella Doria.

We paid a small entry fee and strolled the incredible grounds of the fort. Looking down into the town from the castle.

Amphitheater within the castle.

More views of town.

The huge main hall. Many a celebration has occurred here!

Mary smells herbs near the main hall.

More steep stairs back into town.

Down onto the boardwalk on the harbor in Porto Venere.

Next we visited the church of San Pietro

Amazing history in and amazing setting. We were so glad we made the trip down to Porto Venere!
